According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, 45 percent of “normal adults” snore occasionally and 25 percent snore every night. Most snoring is caused by the muscles in the mouth, tongue, and throat relaxing to the point that they vibrate against each other and partially block the flow of air during sleep. Anything that further relaxes those muscles like alcohol, contributes to the blockage as well as extra fat which makes snoring worse.Snoring has such effects as irritability, lack of focus, decreased libido, daytime sleepiness.Snoring also causes psychological and social damage, it strains social relationships.

A common to prevent sleeping on your back is to sew a tennis ball to the back of your shirt; the discomfort of sleeping on the ball will prevent you from staying on your back.Do not eat a big meal right before bed, if your stomach is full it will push up on your diaphragm and limit breathing passage ways.Avoid eating “rich” foods such as cakes, cookies, chocolate and pizza.By Inhaling steam before sleeping or sleep in a room with a humidifier turned on,will reduce congestion and moisturize the throat. You can also purchase some nasal strips and put them on before going to sleep. Nasal strips will open up your nostrils and allow more air to come in, thus reduce snoring.

Severe snorers have many options available to them, from medical procedures like uvulopalatopharyngoplasty to breathing apparati like the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine.Custom fabricated dental devices” like Snore Guard and Silent Nite help severe snorers by keeping the jaw in the same position during sleep that it is in during the awake hours.Their over-the-counter cousins are glorified boil-and-bite mouthpieces which are equally good in offering solutions in regard to snoring.

Making changes to your lifestyle and diet are not simple things to accomplish and require discipline and the desire for meaningful change. Smoking, drinking alcohol and eating fatty foods can be among the hardest things for a person in our society to give up, and many may think the sacrifice is not worth the reward. With snoring as a strong indicator of being overweight and having a sleep disorder, the rewards of a lifestyle change are well worth the effort. Your sleep-deprived partner will also thank you.

Another option to snoring remedies is Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty(UPPP)surgery. It tightens flabby tissues in the throat and palate, and expands air passages.Thermal Ablation Palatoplasty (TAP) refers to procedures and techniques that treat snoring.Different types of TAP include bipolar cautery, laser and radio frequency. If surgery is too risky or unwanted, you may sleep every night with a nasal mask that delivers air pressure into the throat. This is called continuous positive airway pressure or “CPAP”.Remember, snoring means obstructed breathing, and obstruction can be serious. It’s not funny, and not hopeless.
